International Nuclear Power

The rapid growth of nuclear power internationally demonstrates the will of the international community to fight carbon emissions as well as to enhance independence from fossil fuel producers. Nuenergy has been a key participant in this process from Asia, the Middle East, to North and South America.

Since 1993, we have completed Owner’s Reviews & Assessments, Stood up New Engineering Organizations, Developed Innovative Solutions, and Advanced Engineering Training for the nuclear power industry.

With respect to new builds, we have helped select technology, develop organizations, prepare standards, as well as monitor and evaluate progress toward achieving each organization’s goals. Our contributions have been primarily in the engineering and licensing areas, specifically in assuring that once a technology has been selected, the selected vendors’ products meet all regulatory and engineering requirements and thus the nuclear units are licensable.

An important aspect of our contribution has been the recognition that ultimately each client must have the capacity to meet goals independently, with minimal reliance on external specialists. We therefore look at mentoring of client staff as a key function and use every opportunity to develop client staff.

Notable Specific Experience

New Build Support

  • Technology Selection. This involved review of multiple NSSS Technologies, including the APR 1400, AP1000, ABWR, & EPR. For each client, a set of unique criteria was developed and applied to support the final recommendation.

  • Development of New Engineering Organization, Design Authority with attributes of conservative decision making and technical conscience, Engineering Standards, and Processes to establish and maintain Design Bases, and mentoring of engineering personnel  This process involved specific recommendations based on an understanding  of the unique needs of each client, combined with  the  flexibility necessary  for each phase of the project .

  • Development of New Licensing/Regulatory Assurance Organization and Processes to establish and maintain the Licensing Basis.  This process involved defining the “Licensing Basis” and its role in design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the new plant. This activity is performed in coordination with the Regulator. Staff mentoring and training is part of this activity as well as other Licensing activities.
